Vines grow rapidly and require a spot that gets full sun as well as a strong structure to climb.So, in addition to the standard soil preparation, I also run a 1 ft (30 cm) deep trench down the center of the bed and fill it with compost or well-rotted manure, so that once the sweet peas send their roots down deep, there is a feast awaiting them.
